Houghton on the HillOpen field paths in Leicestershire with long sightlines and few blind corners, so a nervous dog sees what is coming. Parking, terrain and when to avoid it.

One of my go-to training walks, particularly for practising recall in a real-world setting. It is a blend of peaceful countryside, open fields and quiet village lanes, and it is very good for building a dog's confidence and focus outdoors.

Why it works for training

Why it suits nervous and reactive dogs

As you pass through Burton Overy and Kings Norton the route gives you long sight lines and open space. You can spot other walkers and dogs well in advance, which means you get to decide what happens next rather than reacting to it.

For a dog still learning to manage distractions, that advance warning is the whole difference between a walk that goes well and one that does not. It allows gradual exposure in a calm, rural environment on your terms.

Be honest about the distance

Eight miles with 191 metres of climbing is a real walk. If your dog is recovering from anything, is very young, or is carrying a musculoskeletal issue you have not yet got to the bottom of, start somewhere shorter. Gunthorpe is 3.5 miles.

Afterwards

A post-walk treat, for you rather than the dog: The Bell at Burton Overy, or The Rose & Crown in Thurnby.
