A short riverside loop that combines practical training with somewhere genuinely pleasant to be. I use it with clients for dogs of most ages and abilities, and it is the walk I reach for when a dog needs to practise being sociable without being overwhelmed.

What to expect

Café socialisation

We start at the Gunthorpe car park and take a short stroll to a dog-friendly café. Your dog practises settling in a social setting while you have a coffee. That is the exercise — not sitting still on command, but genuinely switching off somewhere with people and movement around.

Along the River Trent

After the café we carry on along the river. Dogs who are suited to it can swim, which is low-impact and burns energy without the joint strain of ball chasing.

Training as we go

Recall, loose lead walking, and socialisation with other dogs, worked in throughout rather than drilled at the start.

Why it suits nervous dogs

The riverside paths are open, so you can see who is coming. There is room to step aside and let someone pass. And the café stop gives a nervous dog a reason to be near people that does not involve being approached by them.

It is short enough that you can stop early if the day is not going well, which matters more than most people expect.
