Enrichment and freework for anxious dogsScatter feeding, foraging mats and ACE freework — how sniffing lowers arousal, and what to try first with a nervous dog.

Enrichment is the most under-used tool available to owners of nervous dogs, largely because it looks too easy to be doing anything. A dog snuffling through a fleece mat for ten minutes does not look like training. It is often worth more than the training.

Why sniffing works

Searching engages the seeking system. It lowers arousal rather than raising it, it is absorbing, and it carries no social pressure — nobody is asking the dog to perform, approach anything, or cope with anyone.

For an anxious dog, that combination is rare and valuable.

Freework

Freework is a structured version of the same idea: a set of surfaces, objects and food placed out for the dog to explore entirely at their own pace, with no instruction and no handler involvement.

You watch rather than participate. What you see tells you a great deal — which surfaces they avoid, whether they can lower their head to eat, whether they shift weight away from one side. It is an assessment as much as an activity.

What I use

PickPocket Foragers make fleece-based enrichment tools that align with Freework principles — a foraging bag, a caterpillar, and a floor blanket. Treats go into the fabric pockets and the dog works them out with their nose.

They are washable and durable, which matters more than it sounds when the thing lives on your kitchen floor.

Who it suits particularly well

I use these in sessions with clients, and with Gatsby, to show how enrichment can be both enjoyable and genuinely useful.

Starting at home tonight

You do not need to buy anything to begin. Scatter part of your dog's evening meal in the grass instead of putting it in a bowl. That is it. A bowl of food is gone in ninety seconds; the same food scattered takes fifteen minutes and leaves a calmer dog.

Once that is routine, a Lickimat or a stuffed Kong with part of the meal does a similar job indoors. Then progress to freework proper.

It pairs naturally with the evening walk. More on decompression.
